My favourite bonsai trees

I find it really therapeutic looking at these trees while having a drink in the evenings. The key distinguishing features of these trees are its root over rock style thus giving the effect of age. I always try to keep the roots moist by watering the trees regularly.

The trees here are Port Jackson figs, Nandina Domestica (otherwise known as Sacred Bamboo) and a Chinese Elm. These plants need a lot of care because they are very sensitive to changes in the weather, especially during the cold winter months.

Key bonsai tips:

  • Ensure the soil is nice and moist, not too much water or the roots will rot but also not too little as it will dry out.
  • Always protect trees from harsh, drying winds.
  • Generally prune in spring, depending on the type of plant.
  • Bonsai trees generally need to be outdoors with plenty of good sun. They can be occasionally placed indoors. I like to display them indoors when I am entertaining friends. These obedient pets are always great topics of conversation.

Enjoy and do let me know what you think.

Ohhh, I love the one where the tree is the ladies hair.

I have tried on numerous occasions to grow bonsais but only succeeded in giving the poor things loooong drawn out deaths. I can grow most anything outside in my flower or vegetable garden but anything inside is a no-go.

great pictures

Thanks for dropping by Zsuzsy. That tree is a Port Jackson fig and the lady is a Buddha's face carved out of a piece of hebel rock. The bonsai will do well outdoors as they can't be indoors over long periods.

Great bonsai photos awsydney. Here in southern Georgia almost any plant can be grown because of the sub-tropical climate. This allows me access to many types of trees to bonsai. My next will be an azalea.

Hi Randy, remember to post some pics of your trees. Would love to check the out. It's first day of spring here today so time to take out the pruning scissors again!

Beautiful bonsai!!! I love the large Jackson fig...the plum tree...the bamboo... :) You have balanced the trees with their respective planters (BTW, very creative combinations for both!).

Thanks Beth, the large Port Jackson fig is my fav. It's also a relatively strong tree so these are good for beginners as they are more hardy plants. The Sacred Bamboo is beautiful in winter before it loses all its leaves but it's spring now so its starting to become green again. Cheers.

Wow! The trunks on those bonsai trees of yours become amazing sculptural objects of beauty. Thanks for sharing these with us. I've never tried growing them, but certainly do admire them.

Hi Peggy, I like the "root over rock" style and the Port Jackson fig is a hardy tree and is perfect for this purpose. They do need a fair bit of TLC because they are sensitive trees especially in winter.

great pics and tips - I always thought they were indor plants so it was interesting to read that they should be kept outdoors.

They can be indoors for a short periods. I like them indoors sometimes as a great decorative feature, but they would need the sun and rain at some stage. Thanks for visiting!
